Golf: You’re only about 100 steps from the proshop and first tee of the beautiful, challenging and very reasonable Pukalani Golf Club. Would you believe $55-- for a morning round, $45 per round after 11 AM and $35—after 2 PM? Most of our guests just walk their clubs over.
Tennis: the nearest court is just below the upcountry pool, a two minute drive from your door. There are multiple courts at the community centers in Makawao and Kula, each about a 10 minute drive from our very central location.
Swimming: For a quick dip, try the large, usually empty upcountry municipal pool complex, a 10 minute walk or two minute drive from our house. There are plenty of lanes for lap swimmers in the big pool; lots of room for beginning swimmers in the large novice pool and great fun for babies in the kiddie pool. Open from 9:30-4:30, admission is free.
Parks and Playgrounds: Just behind the upcountry pool, there's a basketball court, and a small playground with climbables, as well as a huge space for playing catch, frisby or just running around.
Beach Strolling: For a morning treat, you can drive just 12 minutes down the hill to Baldwin Beach Park and stroll over to Baby Beach for one of the most beautiful walks on the island. The waves crashing on sand and rocks backed by intense green vegetation will start your day with a glow. It’s a great spot for meditation as well.
Windsurfing: We’re located about a 12 minute drive from Kanaha Beach, the best place for beginning and intermediate windsurfers and kite surfers. Ho’okipa Beach, one of the world’s top windsurfing spots is less than a 20 minute drive. Even if you stay at a beach location, you’re going to have load up your gear and drive a few minutes to find the wind . Why not enjoy the cool tranquility and reasonable rates at Hale Pukalani with easy access to some of the best windsurfing on the planet?
Surfing: Beginner and intermediate surf spots are located about 25 minutes away at the cove in Kihei and just past the tunnels on the way to Lahaina. Various mobile surf schools can give lessons in either south or west Maui. More advanced surfers can try more than a dozen other spots, all within an easy drive from Hale Pukalani.
Snorkeling/boogey boarding/body surfing/sunbathing at the beach: South Maui beaches: it’s an easy 25 minute drive to the family beaches of Kihei and Wailea with showers, bathrooms and low to medium surf for “water babies” of all ages. Lots of fish and some great turtles inhabit the coral reefs close to shore. 10 minutes further south is the Makena area which includes Big Beach, Little Beach, Black Sand Beach and a half dozen others with varying degrees of seclusion; great for sunbathing, jogging and advanced bodysurfing if the waves have the right shape. Five minutes more driving and you’re at La Perouse which is less a beach than a lava park with tidal pools, great snorkeling ,kayaking and, on a lucky day, dolphin watching in the morning before the surf comes up. West Maui beaches: Good beginners surfing beaches are just past the tunnels on the way to Lahaina and Kaanapali.
Kayaking: Both south and West Maui have good kayaking, depending on whether you want to snorkel or ride the waves. Everything is available within a 25 minute drive.
Whale Watching: Between November and May, you can see whales from both the south and west Maui coasts or go on a whale watch excursion out of Maalaeia or Lahaina.
Hiking: Wonderful hiking in the crater or in the rainforest on the slopes of Haleakala is very accessible from Pukalani. Some of the most popular destinations include the crater itself, the pine forest at the top of Olinda Road, Poli Poli Forest, and, from the Hana Highway, gorgeous tropical waterfalls in the Bamboo Forest and at Twin Falls in the jungles of Haiku.
Fun dining: With it’s central location, Hale Pukalani is only a few minutes from a nice range of fun restaurants in Wailuku/Kahului, Makawao, Paia or Kula. Of course, there’s plenty of fast food nearby too with Wei Wei Chinese BBQ, Mixed Plate Lunch, Pizza Hut, KFC and MacDonalds all within a two minute drive.
Shopping: There are some wonderful clothing, art, craft and souvenir galleries/shops in nearby Makawao town, while Sears, Costco, Walmart, Ross and K-Mart and several dozen boutique shops are located in Kahului , only 12 minutes down the hill. For the most dazzling designs (and prices), cruise over to the hotel shops in Wailea and Kaanapali, only about 35 minutes away.
